At the same time, the air above the ground can fluctuate from below freezing in the winter to scorching hot in the summer.
Geothermal systems work underground, where consistent temperatures make it easy to capture heat and send it indoors. While standard air-source heat pumps have the more challenging task of collecting heat from the ever-shifting outdoor air, geothermal systems tap directly into a constant, reliable thermal battery.

How Does Geothermal Work?
Let’s stay underground for a bit to look at one of the two main components that make up a geothermal system: the ground loop.
What’s a Ground Loop?
A ground loop is an underground network of heavy-duty plastic pipes filled with water and nontoxic antifreeze.
The surrounding soil warms the liquid in the loop as it flows toward the indoor geothermal heat pump. The heat pump has its own small sealed loop filled with refrigerant. The liquids from the loop and the indoor heat pump don’t mix, yet they’re essential to the heating process. (More about that later!)
Types of Loops
Horizontal loops require a larger surface area but less depth. We place the loop in 6-foot trenches underground. A horizontal arrangement is best for large lots with room to spread out the loop underground.
Vertical loops are more compact but require deep drilling to about 400 feet below the surface, making them more costly. Small lots have less space, but can typically accommodate a vertical loop.
The plastic piping extends into your home and connects to the heat pump’s heat exchanger, forming a closed loop between the indoor unit and the underground loop field.
Loops Live Underground
We can install the underground loop vertically or horizontally, depending on your lot size, its soil quality, and property access. In either case, we drill or dig through your lawn with a drilling machine or an excavator to create the loop field.

Underground loops shine when it comes to longevity. They typically last 50 years or more and need little maintenance.
Geothermal Heat Pumps Stay Indoors
Now, let’s head indoors and talk about the geothermal heat pump.
A geothermal heat pump is roughly the same size as a furnace. We typically install geothermal units in basements and utility rooms. These rectangular metal units contain a condenser, a compressor, and other components you’ll find in an air-source heat pump.
The refrigerant inside the heat pump travels in a closed loop. During the heat transfer process, it flows near the liquid in the loop, but doesn’t physically mix with it.
Geothermal heat pumps, like all HVAC equipment, require annual inspections, filter changes, and tune-ups.
How the Loop and Geothermal Heat Pump Interact
The loop contains liquid that absorbs heat from the Earth. It passes the heat off to the refrigerant in the heat pump. Here’s how:
- Heat Exchange: The two liquids flow through separate channels in the heat exchanger. A metal plate inside the component facilitates the heat transfer from the hot liquid in one channel to the cool refrigerant in the other.
- Hot Gas: The refrigerant turns into a gas as it heats up in the exchanger, then flows to the compressor, where it becomes even hotter.
- Heating Your Home: The scorching gas flows through the condenser coil, releasing its heat into the air blown over the coil. The warmed air then flows into ductwork and circulates throughout your home.
- Cooling Your Home: A valve on the heat pump can reverse the process, enabling the unit to remove hot air from your home and send it underground via the liquid in the loop.
